Ann Murbach Schmittgen
Ann Murbach Schmittgen, 92, of Elyria, died September 18, 2010 at her home.
She was born June 17, 1918 in Elyria, where she had been a lifelong resident.
She was a 1936 graduate of Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, and a 1938 graduate of Holmby Junior College in Los Angeles, CA.
She was a lifelong member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, First Church Women and a former Deaconess. She was also a member of the Elyria Service League, Lorain County Historical Society and Fortnightly and was an avid bridge player. Golf was her passion and she was a lifetime member of Elyria Country Club, where she recorded a hole in one on the par 3 hole #4.
She and her husband traveled extensively, always with their clubs, and played many courses, including the Old and Ancient Club of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Ann is survived by daughters Lynn (Tom) Newell of Elyria and Nancy (Len) Hopper of Seattle, WA; son Doug Schmittgen of Elyria; grandchildren Patrick Newell, Ann Hamker, Stacy Carroll and Stephanie Hopper; great grandchildren Cassadi Newell, Kaye Hamker, Madilyn and Jacob Carroll; sister Molly Chapman of Toledo and a brother John Murbach of Elyria.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Russell W. Schmittgen in 2006, grandson Jay Newell, parents Ralph and Ellen Murbach and a sister Madge Wells.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. A funeral service will be Friday 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 Second Street, Elyria with Reverend Christina Kukuk and Reverend Kathryn Ketchum officiating.
