F. Charles Shope, Sr.
F. Charles Shope, Sr., 70, of Elyria died September 16, 2010 at Grace Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, following a lengthy illness through which he carried a never quit attitude. He was born December 8, 1939 in Harrisburg, PA, and was a 1957 graduate of Hempfield High School in Landisville, PA, and a 1960 graduate of Temple University.
Charlie was a long time Lorain County resident and for nearly twenty years was vice president of Confidential Credit Counselors, Inc. He enjoyed travel, music and was an avid pinochle card player. He was a collector of trains and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. He had been involved in Lorain County Hot Stove Baseball and coached his team, Classy Chariots, to state championships in 1989 and 1991. Charlie was a longtime member of the Elyria Area Umpires Association where he made a lifetime of friends. His love of baseball led him to become a member of the Board of the Cleveland Indians Wahoo Club.
Charlie is survived by his mother, M. Isabel Shope nee: Hassler; a brother, James (Kathy) Shope both of Allentown PA.; his loving companion, Linda R. Verlotti and children, Chip (Lisa) Shope, John (Nancy) Shope, Matt (Alisa) Shope and Rick (Tracy) Verlotti and twelve grandchildren, all of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Carl Shope and a brother and his wife, Richard and Constance Shope.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11:00 AM until the time of a 1:00 PM service at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. Reverend Charles Ryba will officiate with burial in Brookdale Cemetery.
