Charlotte L. Miller
Charlotte L. Miller, of Elyria, died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Avon, where she had been a resident for the past several years and celebrated her 103rd birthday on September 14.
Charlotte, the youngest and last living of ten children was born September 14, 1907 in her home in LaGrange to Frederick and Dorothea (nee Simms) Wacker. Her father, a stone mason, immigrated from Germany in 1880 and her mother was also of German descent.
She attended grade school at a one room school in Carlisle Township, where her oldest brother, Albert, had taught and graduated from Elyria High School with the January class of 1926.
Charlotte married Albert Miller from Berea, OH, settled in Elyria and never left. Her family was her life, through which she maintained a high energy level as a homemaker deluxe in addition to outside career interests. Whether it was factory work during WWII, running the concession stand in Cascade Park, or selling ladies wear at the former Berson's Dry Goods on Broad Street in Elyria, or finishing her career at the Higbee Store at Midway Mall, she was always on the move.
Charlotte was a life member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Elyria. She loved music, played the piano, was an accomplished seamstress and had a sense of humor that made everyone around her feel better. With nine brothers and sisters, there were many nieces and nephews, and "Aunt Charlotte" was always available when help was needed.
Charlotte is survived by her son Jim (Regina) Miller; grandchildren Pamela (Tony) Keys; Lisa (Jeff) McVeigh and Jim C. (Julia) Miller; great grandchildren Jack and Regan Keys, Maxwell McVeigh and Jake and Nick Miller. "We will all miss her terribly."
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert R. Miller in 1980, brothers Albert, Charles, Louis, Walter, Herbert and Frederick Wacker; sisters Martha Lehman, Alma Burnett and Viola Fridenstein.
A private graveside service for the family will be held at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Dicken Funeral Home, Elyria is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 9715 East River Rd., Elyria 44035 or Good Samaritan Nursing Home Activities Fund, 32900 Detroit Rd., Avon, OH 44011. For online condolences to the family, visit www.dickenfuneralhome.com
