David McAvena Obituary

David Allan McAvena, 80, of Vermilion, passed away peacefully January 27, 2025 at Kingston of Vermilion. He is now at peace in heaven; reunited with loved ones including his cherished wife, Jenny, whom he missed deeply every day since her passing in 2010, brother, Greg and mother, Reverend O. E. Rusty Curry whose love and guidance shaped his life and step-father, Lorain Leichty.

Dave was born May 13, 1944 in Elyria and lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. He leaves behind his children; Steve (Legea) McAvena, Jeff (Genia) McAvena, Ashley (Scott) Salvadore, Jr. and Hannah McAvena; beloved sister, DianaLynn Leichty; brother, Steve Leichty; nieces and nephews, Michelle, Michael, Amanda and Matthew and great-nephew, Corey.  Dave had a special place in his heart for his many grandchildren, Letea, Cody, Chris and Reyvin as well as the joy of becoming a great-grandfather to Zayden, Avery and Anzley Jo.

Dave was employed at Ridge Tool Company, Elyria before branching out to open Ski’s Southend CBs and a landscaping company, “God Grows It, Dave Mows It”. A man of deep faith, Dave knew what awaited him in the next life—a life in the arms of Jesus, his Savior, free from pain and tears. His unwavering belief brought him peace throughout his life and continues to comfort his family now.

Known for his larger-than-life personality, Dave was the source of countless hilarious memories that his family will forever cherish. He had a passion for fishing and hunting, a love he passed on to his children and grandchildren.  His love for the water didn’t end with fishing; he was also an incredible water skier. Many knew Dave by his nickname, 'Skis,' a nod to his love of the sport, which he often signed off as during his time in the CB business. Dave loved to ride motorcycles, animals, was an avid fan of westerns (Gunsmoke was his favorite), enjoyed splitting firewood and Mt. Dew.

Dave loved competition, whether it was who could catch the most fish, who could swim the fastest, who could eat the most shrimp at Red Lobster, or who could win at Uno. His playful spirit and competitive nature brought out the best in all of us, making every moment together an unforgettable adventure.

Above all, David cherished being around people and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
