Donald John Schaffer

Donald John Schaffer, 81, of Elyria, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully July 6, 2025 surrounded by his family. Born in Elyria August 14, 1943, Donald served his country with pride in the US Army, carrying values of duty and courage throughout his life.

Donald was a guiding light to his children teaching them kindness and hard work. To his grandchildren, he was a joyful storyteller and loving grandfather whose warmth made every moment special. An avid fisherman, he found peace on the water, sharing stories and laughter with loved ones.  Known for his generosity and humor, Donald touched many lives with his warmth.

Donald is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Barbara with whom he shared a life filled with love and laughter; children, Jeff (Chastity) Schaffer and Jennifer (Brett) Elek; grandchildren, Emily, Colin, and Jessen; one great-grandchild; and many friends and family.

Friends will be received Thursday, July 10, 2025 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria.  An 11:00 am graveside will follow at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria with Chaplain Chuck Behrens officiating and Elyria VW Post 1079 will present military honors. 

Donald’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved. Rest in peace, Donald—you will be deeply missed.
