Edward William Bruck, 74, of Elyria, died Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. He was born May 28, 1950, in Elyria and was a 1968 graduate of Elyria High School.
After graduation, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in July 1968. During his Air Force service, he completed multiple tours in Vietnam as an aircraft mechanic, maintaining and repairing aircraft critical to combat operations. He achieved the rank of Sergeant (SGT) before separating from active duty in 1972, and then served an additional 22 months in the Air Force Reserve.
In June 1974, Ed reenlisted on active duty in the U.S. Army, beginning as a CH-54 helicopter crew chief at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1976, he advanced to flight engineer, and by 1979 he transitioned into Aviation Life Support Equipment. Early in his Army career, Ed made history as the first enlisted Army man to attend the Navy’s Aircrew Survival Equipment Course at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Lakehurst, New Jersey, demonstrating exceptional skill and professionalism. He served as an aviation safety noncommissioned officer (NCO) with multiple assignments in Germany and deployed in support of Operation DESERT STORM. He retired from active duty in June 1994 as a Master Sergeant (MSG) after over two decades of distinguished service.
Following his military career, Ed worked in a steel mill, then in vinyl sign making, and later for Enterprise. He was known for his sharp wit and loved sharing jokes with friends. Ed had a lifelong passion for science fiction shows, Tom Clancy novels, and cooking shows. He enjoyed cooking for himself and was rarely without a warm cup of tea in hand. Among his siblings, he was affectionately known as “Butch.”
Ed is survived by his sons: Major Christopher W. (Raschelle) Bruck, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina; Brad E. (Taylor) Carver, Columbus; and Eddy R. Carver, Johnstown; granddaughters Harlow, Grace, Lydia, Lucy, and Eden; grandson Bodhi; brothers Dennis (Cecelia), Tim (Julie), Tom (Judy), Kenneth (Kelly), and Rick (Kaoru); sisters Patricia Bruck, Ruth (Larry Meadows) Bruck, and Elaine (Vince) Zemanek; and 11 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J. and Dorothy E. Bruck; brother, Todd; grandson, Gabriel F. Bruck; niece, Alicia A. LaRiche; and nephew, Jeremy Bruck.
Friends will be received Wednesday, June 4, 2025 from 10:00 am until the time of an 11:00 am funeral mass at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 611 Lake Avenue, Elyria with Reverend Charles T. Ryba officiating. Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will present military honors following mass. Burial will be in Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery, Sandusky.
Those attending who are currently serving or retired military are welcome to wear their uniforms in honor of Ed’s service.
