George R. Coates

George R. Coates, 98, of Sheffield Village and formerly of Elyria, died April 25, 2010 at his home.

He was born March 25, 1912 in Brookfield Township, Trumbull County. He served as a Seabee with the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II. He moved from Niles, OH to Elyria in 1963 and in 1972, founded Trico Oxygen, which he owned and operated until selling in 1980.

He enjoyed spending the winters with his wife in Nokomis, FL and attended Avon United Methodist Church. He was a former member of Sincerity Chapter No. 694 F. & A.M. and Ida McKinley Chapter No. 229 O.E.S., both in Niles, OH.

George is survived by nieces, nephews and his caregiver Luella Thorne. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Alice Louise Coates in 2002 and seven brothers.

Visitation will be Thursday 10:00 a.m. until the time of an 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria with Reverend Elizabeth Krall officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, OH.
