Gerald D. Swiers

Gerald D. Swiers, 89, of Elyria died Sunday, September 5, 2010 at Brighton Gardens in Westlake. He was born December 30, 1920 in Elyria and was a 1939 graduate of Elyria High School. He and his wife owned and operated H.H. Benham Insurance Agency until retiring in 1985. They also had an interest in standardbred racing and were involved in racing at Northfield Park. Jerry was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elyria Elks Lodge #465 and Elyria United Polish Club and was a former member of Elyria American Legion Post 12, Elyria V.F.W. #1079 and Kiwanis Club.

Jerry is survived by daughters, Laurie (Paul) Bate of Elyria and Sally(Rick) Gutowski of Blair, Nebraska; and grandsons, Chris and Cameron Bate.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth B. in 2000; sister, Donna Radick and parents, Carl and Frances Swiers.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of a 1:00 PM service at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. Reverend Jerry L. Murphy will officiate with burial in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, 44035.
