Helen Pierce, 98, a beloved matriarch and a more than 70 year resident of Elyria, died peacefully in her sleep January 13, 2025. She is survived by a huge family that will miss her dearly.
Born Helen Virginia Moran September 29, 1926 in Newhall, West Virginia, Helen grew up in Cucumber, West Virginia and was a 1944 graduate of Big Creek High School. In 1951 she moved to Elyria and met Harmon William Pierce on a blind date. They fell in love, got married, and had six children who were all raised in the house she’d spend the rest of her life in.
Helen was proud of her heritage, returning to Cucumber annually for “Cucumber Days.” She was a fan of westerns and an avid reader. She loved feeding her family (including for a time, a little dog named Trixie), and on holidays her children and grandchildren looked forward to feasts she prepared all by herself, including her famous cornbread dressing- a family favorite. After the death of her husband in 1978, she raised her kids, and was an amazing babysitter who helped raise her grandkids and great-grandkids. Her home was always open to her family, with a warm bed to sleep in and a hot meal.
Helen is survived by children, Kathy (John) Zeller, Donna Henry and Judy Pierce; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon; children, Rebecca Parker, Richard Pierce and Doug Pierce; grandson, Brent Wooddell; brothers, Ralph Moran and Bill Moran and a sister Linda Moran.
Friends will be received Friday, January 17, 2025 from 10:00 am until the time of a 12:00 pm service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria with Reverend Kathryn Ketchum officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, Inc., PO Box 72101, Cleveland, Ohio 44197 whose assistance enabled Helen to remain in her home of 70 years.
