Jean C. Bowen (nee Crisp) 89, of Elyria, died Saturday, June 18, 2011 surrounded by all her children at MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland. She was born February 18, 1922 in Elyria where she was a 1939 graduate of Elyria High School and had been organizer for the class reunions. She received her BA in math from Denison University, graduating Magna-Cum Laude in 1943 and continued graduate work at Case Western University. In 1971 she earned a degree in data processing from Lorain County Community College.
Jean was a life long member of First United Methodist Church, Elyria, served on the administrative board of the church and numerous committees. She was past president, treasurer and board member of United Methodist Women and had been a volunteer at Wesleyan Village. She was a member of Elyria YWCA and served on the board of trustees for a number of years. She was a lifelong Girl Scout and served on the Erie Shores Girl Scout Council as district chairman. She was president of PTA Council of Elyria Public Schools and as president, worked on campaigns for school bond issues and school levies and the selection of the site for Elyria West High School and Westwood Junior High and the design plans for those schools. She was also active in the Elyria High School Band Boosters and had been an allocations panel member for the Lorain County United Way for more than 20 years. Jean was chosen First Lady of Elyria by Bata Sigma Pi in 1974 and has been a long time member of the Culture Club.
Jean is survived by a son, Thomas C. Bowen of Elyria; daughters, Charlotte Wagamon, M.D., of Conneaut Lake, PA, Jeanette Quinn of LaPorte, IN and Christine Johnson of Sylvania, OH; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Thomas D., May 29, 2011 and parents, Ernest J. and Estella A. (nee Hively) Crisp.
A memorial service will be Sunday 3:00 PM June 26, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 312 3rd Street, Elyria with Reverend Roger Talbott officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Elyria.
