Joan C. Washburn

Joan C. Washburn (nee Hand), 89, of Amherst and formerly Elyria, died Wednesday January 8, 2025 in her home.  She was born November 29, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA and was a 1953 graduate of Overbrook High School. Joan had been employed by the Elyria City Schools in the cafeteria at Elyria High School.  She was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Elyria where she had been secretary and treasurer, sang in the choir and treasurer of the church preschool.  Joan was also a member and worthy matron of Elyria Chapter #165 Order of Eastern Star and El Rey Caldron.  She had been DeMolay leader, mother advisor for Rainbow Girls, Cub Scout den mother and a brownie leader. Joan was an excellent cook, enjoyed making people laugh and smile and loved a good joke.  Other interests included crocheting, sewing, fishing with her husband and trips to the casinos.

Joan is survived by children, Vicki (Harry) Metzger of Pennsauken, NJ, Douglas (Debbie) Washburn of Glenburnie, MD, Linda (Gary) Gradisek of Vermilion, Larry (Nancy) Washburn of Elyria and June (Greg) Gradisek of Elyria; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and beloved niece, Janet Rambo of Plano, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Chilson I. “Sonny” Washburn III in 2003; a brother, Robert “Bobby” Hand and parents, Larry and Helen Hand.

A time of remembrance for Joan will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 1:00 pm at 1907 Central School, 474 Church Street, Amherst, Ohio 44001.  Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
