John A. Hales

John A. Hales, 91, a lifelong resident of Elyria, went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, June 22, 2011. He departed from this life in his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 17, 1920 in Elyria and was a 1938 graduate of Elyria High School. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII in Ireland, England, Africa and Italy.
John worked in the family business, Hales Complete Food Market on Middle Avenue in Elyria all his life, where he was one of the family owners and operators until the store was closed on April 30, 2005.
He was a member of Abbe Road Baptist Church, Elyria and enjoyed golf, gardening and spending time with family.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Flora A. Flossie (nee Miller) Hales; sons Timothy A. of Alpharetta, GA, Richard J. of Elyria and Gary D. Hales of Grafton; twelve grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and brother Ellsworth G. Hales of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Ethel Hales, brother Lawrence Hales and a sister Irene Stone.
Family will receive friends Thursday, June 23, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. Visitation will also be on Friday June 24, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of an 11:30 a.m. funeral service at Abbe Road Baptist Church, 670 N. Abbe Rd., Elyria, OH 44035. Pastor Carmen Muoio will officiate and burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria with Elyria V.F.W. Post 1079 conducting military honors at the grave.
