Lorna Marmie (nee McMorris) Smith, 96, of Elyria, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Rose Senior Living, Avon. She was born December 20, 1928 in Sault St. Marie, Michigan and was the daughter of the late Harry and Cora (nee Rowe) McMorris.
Lorna graduated in 1946 from Sault St. Marie High School, Sault St. Marie, Michigan. When her father unexpectedly became ill with a heart condition, she managed McMorris Men’s Wear while still in high school, issuing paychecks, ordering inventory, bookkeeping, until his recuperation. In 1949, she married the love of her life, Charles Frederick “Fred” Smith. They met on a blind date arranged by her older sisters and were married for 65 wonderful years before Fred passed in 2015.
Lorna enjoyed golf, traveling, hiking with her grandsons and her husband, genealogy and spending time with family and friends. She attended LCCC and earned an associate’s degree. Lorna was a meticulous genealogist and had her work notated in numerous books and writings.
Surviving are her children; Anita Smith (Jeff Lessig), Susan (Tom) Leininger, Gerald (Darlene) Smith and Sally Roth; grandsons; Stirling Roth, Greg Leininger, Derek Roth, Jacob Roth, Michael Lessig, Kevin Leininger and Brandon Smith; great grand-daughter, Emme Leininger and a sister, Carole (Gerry) Bosshart.
Lorna was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frederick “Fred” Smith; parents; sisters, Evelyn Reninger, Ruth Oakes and Betty Baxter; brother, Harry McMorris and a grandson, Bryan Andrew Leininger.
A private service will be held at a later date.
