Marjorie Haag Henderson, age 87, of Oberlin, Ohio passed away January 26, 2026, at the Care Center of Kendal at Oberlin after a long illness. She was born November 4, 1938 in New York City, to Frank Anthony Haag and Lois McGuire Haag.
Marj attended Shaker Heights High School in Ohio, where she was a varsity cheerleader, then attended Case Western Reserve University, where she majored in French literature. At Case Western, she met Norman Henderson who was pursuing his PhD. Upon her graduation in 1960, they married and a year later moved to Oberlin.
They were in their 66th year of marriage when Marj died.
Marj and Norm loved Oberlin and its residents and made it their lifetime home. In 1970, Marj received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oberlin College, and taught kindergarten at Eastwood School and Lake Ridge Academy.
Following her teaching career, Marj worked in the catalog department of the Oberlin College Library until her retirement. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle fan throughout her life; she also loved Maine Coon cats and had them as pets for many years. She was a loving wife and mother and had many lifelong friends.
Marj is survived by her husband, Norman; her sister, Carol Nickel; daughters, Carol Henderson (Cilla Smith) and Lucy Cryan (Kevin); grandchildren, Lucy and Peter Smith, Vi and Anna Cryan and three nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Peter Haag, who died from injuries sustained earlier in Vietnam military combat.
There will be a small service for family and close friends this spring at the Kendal at Oberlin.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish can send a donation in Marj’s honor to CATSS (Community Action To Save Strays) in Oberlin.
