Mary K. Canan, 100, of Elyria, died Friday, February 16, 2024 at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. She was born November 6, 1923 in Oxford, Ohio, a graduate of Brookville Indiana High School and also a business college graduate. After moving to Elyria, she had been employed at Thew Shovel Company and Columbia Gas Company. Mary was a 70 year member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was active in the Alter Guild, a choir member, directed the children’s choir and was a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of Lutheran Children’s Aid Society, a volunteer at the hospital gift shop, delivered meals on wheels and was a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed cruises with her husband and was a member of numerous bridge clubs.
Mary is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Hatvany of Cary, NC; sons, Mark (Barbara) Canan and Eric Canan, both of Elyria; grandchildren, Melissa Canan, Matthew Hatvany, Andrew (Emily) Canan, Nikolaus Canan, Kathryn Canan and Laura Hatvany and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. in 2019.
Mary was a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Friends will be received Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A service will be Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 10:30 am at Grace Lutheran Church, 9685 East River Street, Elyria, Ohio with Reverend Robert F. Weldon, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at 1:15 pm in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
