Mary E. Petersen (nee Pelton), 97, of Elyria, died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Wesleyan Village.
She was born June 23, 1912 in Medina, OH and was a 1930 graduate of Medina High School. She graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music in 1934 and was an elementary school music teacher in the Elyria City School system.
She also taught piano in her home and was an organist at churches and funeral homes in Elyria. Mrs. Petersen was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elyria, the chancel choir of the church, United Methodist Women and Elizabeth Stevens Society.
She was also a member of the Womans Club, Elyria Musical Arts Society and had been a volunteer and later a resident at Wesleyan Village. She had traveled to all fifty states and several foreign countries. She enjoyed cooking and baking in her home, which she distributed to others. It was important for Mary to share her love of music and sense of humor with both her children and her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her son Alan (Mary Lou) Petersen of Elyria; grandchildren Jeffrey (Dianna) Schmidt of South Amherst; Julie Mitchell of Elyria; Amy Petersen of Chicago and Leslie (Mike) Brown of Bay Village; great grandchildren Joshua, Jenna, Samuel and Oliver.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russell in 1974, daughter Dona Schmidt in 1990; sisters Violet, Eloda, Lura and Donna; brothers Ashley, Maynard and Daniel Pelton; parents Daniel and Eva Pelton.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of a 4:30 p.m. memorial service in Cascade Hall at Wesleyan Village, 807 West Ave., Elyria.
Reverend Beth McKee will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to New Life Hospice, 5255 N. Abbe Rd. Elyria or First United Methodist Church, 312 Third St., Elyria, OH 44035
