Melvin Albert “Shorty” Hartwig, Jr., 75, of Elyria, passed away January 3, 2024 at Mercy New Life Hospice, Lorain. He was born December 8, 1948 in Milwaukee, WI to Alice Marie (nee Cloke) and Melvin Jasper Hartwig and attended Tomahawk High School in Tomahawk, WI. After high school, he joined the US Army and served in Vietnam as a driver in the 534th transportation company receiving 2 Purple Hearts. Melvin married RoseMary Graham April 24, 1971. For 40 years, Melvin was employed as a tool maker at Ridge Tool Company, Elyria. He was a life member of Elyria VFW #1079 and enjoyed traveling with his wife.
Melvin is survived by a sister, Burna Martin; brothers, Chris and Rick Hartwig; sisters-in-law, Patty Hartwig all of WI and Judy Emmerich (friend, Robert Donelson) of Jeromesville, OH; brothers-in-law, Larry (Diane) Graham of Dallas, TX and Tommy (Cheleen) Graham of Vermilion and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, RoseMary in 2022; parents and brothers, Ronald and David Hartwig.
Friends will be received Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 10:00 am until the time of a noon service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria with Reverend Beth McKee officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where Elyria VFW #1079 will present military honors.
