Merle J. Baker, a lifelong resident of Elyria, died Friday, March 4, 2011 in his home after a long illness.
Born in Elyria, he was a 1954 graduate of Elyria High School and was formerly employed as a machinist in the tool room at General Motors Fisher Body in Elyria, retiring in 1987.
He also was co-owner of the former Baker-Wright Automotive in Elyria for many years. Merle enjoyed working with and restoring cars and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean A. of Elyria; daughters Tamara (Mike) Osipov of Florida, Brenda (Gary) Schaefer of Elyria, Jill (Dan) Gerome of N. Ridgeville and a son Kevin (Laurie) Baker of Elyria; 9 grandchildren and sister Marilyn Keller of Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ward and Irene Baker, a sister Nancy Baker in 2011 and a brother Jerry Baker in 2002.
Family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. A funeral mass will be Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 10:30a.m. at St. Jude Church, 590 Poplar St., Elyria. Reverend Frank P. Kosem will be the celebrant and interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
