Mildred A. Milly McMillion, 88, died peacefully May 13, 2011 at Welcome Nursing Home in Oberlin. She was born April 29, 1923 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky to Lloyd and Grace Walker (nee Wile). Mildred lived the majority of her life in Ohio before moving to Eustis, Florida where she resided until retiring in 2002, returning to Ohio and living in Oberlin for the remainder of her life.
Milly spent her early years in the Wayne County area, graduated from Congress High School and became an agent for Lightning Rod Mutual Insurance Co. in Wooster, Ohio.
A World War II veteran, she was one of the early WAVES to enlist in the U.S. Navy serving from 1943-1946 and along with her brother, John Walker, were one of the first brothers and sisters to join the Navy on the same day.
Upon completion of her Naval service, she was employed as a professional photographer and held positions in a number of administrative occupational areas including clerk/dispatcher for the Mansfield Police Dept. in Mansfield, Ohio., supervisor at the Lorain County Detention Home, director of The Search Group Home for Girls in Elyria, Ohio and retiring as a church office administrator in Eustis, Florida.
Milly was most happy when helping others in addition to being a mother, homemaker, private pilot and exceptional sharpshooter. She also enjoyed photography, gardening, reading and embroidering.
She is survived by sons, Robert B. Smit of Nashville, Tennessee and Engel Poge (Maureen) Smit III of Oberlin, Ohio; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother John Walker of Tallahassee, Florida.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Swartz of Eustis, Florida and former husbands, Engel Bud Smit Jr. of West Salem, Ohio and Robert D. McMillion of Shiloh, Ohio.
Burial with military honors was held May 24, 2011 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. Arrangements were under the direction of Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elyria.
