Richard Blount Obituary

Richard Blount died Saturday, March 12, at Kendal at Oberlin. He was born October 1, 1915 in Sharon, Connecticut, the son of Nelson and Bertha Rorty Blount. He spent most of his childhood and youth in Maplewood, NJ, where he graduated from Columbia High School in 1933 and received a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1938.
Mr. Blount spent four years during World War II working for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington, DC. The rest of his professional life was spent at the General Electric Nela Park campus in East Cleveland, where he worked in the photo lamp department developing and testing photographic lighting products.
Volunteer work centered around three churches from 1955 to 2005. When his own sons were teenagers, Mr. Blount led the Boy Scout troop at the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland. He served as finance chair and stewardship chair at both the Unitarian Universalist Church in Asheville, NC, and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Hendersonville, NC.
Known for his gifts as a photographer, he also was an expert woodworker and loved hiking, camping and sailing. He had a commercial pilots license and had a lifelong interest in amateur radio. A lover of classical music, he was an enthusiastic player of the French horn and trumpet. He served for a number of years on the board of the North Carolina Symphony.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Viola Moore Blount, sons Peter (Anne Marie) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Stephen (Alice) of Wheaton, Illinois, and daughter Anne (Steve Sanford) of Shaker Hts., Ohio, and five grandchildren.
