Sophie Soeffker Albrecht

Sophie Soeffker Albrecht, 94, of Elyria, formerly of Lakewood, Ohio, passed away peacefully September 14, 2017. Born September 6, 1923, she is predeceased by her parents Henry and Marie (Strumpel) Soeffker, husband Dr. Joseph Albrecht, son David (Herzberger) and first husband George Herzberger.

Sophie’s passion was music, and she began teaching and performing at an early age. Sophie graduated from Baldwin Wallace College with a performance major in piano and a minor in organ. She became a member of the BW conservatory piano faculty shortly thereafter. Sophie was active musically in the Lakewood United Methodist Church as assistant organist, children and youth choir director and developed and directed the hand bell choir.

Sophie maintained and supported numerous music clubs in the Cleveland area including Fortnightly Musical Club, the National Federation of Music Clubs where she served as a vice president and was on the executive committee, Mu Phi Epsilon, Three Arts, American Guild of Organists, and a board member of Lyric Opera Cleveland. She served as a local and state music club president, volunteer and member of the Peer Group for the Annual Fund at BW. Sophie continued her musical career at Wesley Village where she developed and directed the hand bell and chimes choir.

Sophie is survived by her sister Elfriede Patton (Soeffker), her children Gregory Herzberger, Julie (Michael) Herzberger Duncan, Deborah Herzberger Somerville, her stepson Leland Albrecht, his wife and her son, grandchildren Margaret and Molly Somerville, Kelly (Albrecht) Polito, several great grandchildren, and her dear friend Wilmot Irish.

A memorial service celebrating Sophie’s life will be held Sunday 1:00 pm, Oct 15, 2017 at Wesleyan Village Chapel, 807 West Avenue, Elyria. Reverend Beth McKee, Chaplin will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Sophie Albrecht Baldwin Wallace Scholarship fund in support of piano majors c/o Baldwin Wallace University, 275 Eastland Road, Berea, OH, 44017, ATTN: Advancement.
