Stanford Oney, 76, of Elyria, formerly of Lorain, died Thursday, May 5, 2011 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a courageous 9 year battle with lung cancer and Leukemia. He was the beloved husband of Beverly Oney of Elyria; loving father to Kimberly Kavalec of Lorain and Debra Hutchison, San Diego, CA; the best Poppy in the world to Kara Kavalec, Chicago, IL and Peter Pelanek, Phoenix, AZ and best friend to David Jenkins, Pompano Beach, FL. Stanford was born in Bruin, KY and moved to Lorain, Ohio in 1951. A few years later in 1958 he met his wife, Beverly of 50 years at the Park Avenue Caf in Lorain. They recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Stanford served in the United States Army and was stationed in Mannheim, Germany 1956 to 1958. Stanford retired from Ford Motor Company, Lorain Assembly plant in 1988, where he worked most recently on the bi-level and was affectionately known as Gomez to his friends. Stanford was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the lake and the outdoors. He found great joy in walking and swimming with his two best four-legged friends, J.R. (Jack Russell) and Sami. He called himself the dog whisperer. Stanford spent many hours creating beautiful wood creations in his work shop as well as repairing anything that needed to be fixed and if it wasnt broken, he still took it apart to see how it worked. Stanford was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Oney; father, Charlie Oney; brother, Roscoe Oney; sister, Dottie Webb; daughter Karen Sue Oney and grandson, Joseph Vincent Pelanek.
Visitation will be Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of a 1:00 p.m. funeral service at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Protective League of Lorain County, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035 in honor of Stanford and his love of animals.
