Virginia Lee Ginny Garrett (nee McCain), 79, of North Ridgeville, died Friday; March 25, 2011 at her home.
She was born April 7, 1931 in Uniontown, PA and was a 60 years resident of Elyria before moving to North Ridgeville. Ginny was a member of Community of Christ in Elyria, was the former Director of Christian Education and a Sunday school teacher for over forty years. She was recently recognized by having the education wing of the church named in her honor.
She was an accomplished artist and wood carver and a member of the Black River Woodcarving Guild. She studied portrait painting under a nationally known master artist, having had one of her illustrations published in a national magazine. She was skilled in the use of woodworking tools and saws and designed indoor/outdoor projects and furniture.
Ginny was best known for her landscaping and gardening abilities, creating beautiful displays of flowers and was sought after for her knowledge of plants and foliage. She had a love of animals and had worked as an assistant at Ridgeville Animal Hospital. She was an avid reader and a frequent library visitor, reading numerous books each week. She wrote poetry and belonged to a local poetry group. She had a love of Southern culture and was a country music fan, especially bluegrass. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was a creative seamstress, making clothes, gifts and furnishings for her home and family and friends.
She is survived by daughters Ruth (Ray) Campbell of Sheffield Village and Pat (Geri) Danielson of Oberlin; grandchildren Craig (Holly) Danielson, Bryan (Laura) Danielson and Erin Corrigan; great granddaughter Kaeleigh Corrigan; sisters Gladys Archibald of Elyria and Lois Beckett of North Ridgeville; brother Gary McCain of Elyria; numerous nieces and nephews and childhood friend Gloria Burgess.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Coy Lee Garrett in 2006; infant daughter Connie Garrett, infant son Scott Garrett, parents Elroy & Ruth McCain; sisters Wilma Rogers and Bevan Hergert and a brother Jack McCain.
A graveside service will be Tuesday 1:00 p.m. at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
A memorial service will be Sunday 3:00 p.m. May 1, 2011 at Community of Christ, 42515 Adelbert St., Elyria. Memorial contributions may be made to Community of Christ P.O. Box 982 Elyria, OH 44036. Dicken Funeral Home, Elyria is in charge of arrangements.
