Alan R. Hornby, 77, of Grafton, died Sunday, January 15, 2012 in his home after a brief illness.He was born December 13, 1934 in Elyria, served with the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 and has been a lifelong Grafton area resident.He was employed for 30 years at Columbia Gas of Ohio, retiring in 1990 as division plant supervisor. He was a life member of Elyria AmVets No.32 and a member of Wellington Eagles No.2051, LaGrange Lodge No. 399 F. & A.M and the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Club, His interests included farming and traveling. He and his wife Jean enjoyed attending country and bluegrass concerts and county fairs throughout Ohio.Al is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean L. (nee Tompkins); son Michael Hornby (Laura) of Grafton; grandchildren Jacqueline Somerville (Joe), Jeanette Hornby (Chris), Jamie, Joanna and J. Michael Hornby, all of Grafton; great grandsons Cody, Michael and Liam; sister Treva Eastman (John) of Bellevue, OH and nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his father Henry Hornby, mother Helen Bertoch (nee Thompson) and a brother Larry Bertoch.Friends will be received Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. Friends will also be received Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 10 a.m. until the time of an 11:00 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home with Reverend Ralph Krall, pastor of LaGrange United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Nesbett Cemetery, Grafton, where Elyria V.F.W. #1079 will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
