Albert P. Thorley's Obituary
Albert Thorley Obituary
Albert P. Thorley, 93, of Elyria passed away peacefully, Friday, January 22, 2021, surrounded by his family. Al was a life-long resident of Elyria, with his wife of 70 years, JoAnn (nee Boddy) Thorley. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, in 1953; mother Ruth (nee Roe) Thorley; father Edward William Thorley; sister Maxine Weber and brother Donald Thorley. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; daughters, Jill Pearl (Jerry), Jane Hannah (Gary), Beth Liederbach (Eric), Barb Kraus (Tom) and Amy Thomas; 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. After graduating from Elyria High School in 1945, he attended Ohio State University. He served in the US Navy, stationed at the Marshall Islands, in the South Pacific. Al then became an insurance salesman for George R. Allen & Son Agency. After being a bank teller at Lorain County Savings and Trust, then a field representative for the Central Mutual Insurance Company, Al returned in 1955 and purchased the George R. Allen & Son Agency, and established Allen Thorley DeLloyd Insurance. The agency started with a single file drawer and with growth, added a second location in Vermilion, Ohio. He spent his 50+ years in the insurance industry establishing long term relationships with the companies he represented, his customers, extended family and friends. Those relationships continued after retiring and selling his agency. Throughout his life, when Al was not at the office, he spent his time enjoying his cottage on Lake Erie, boating and fishing with his children, grandchildren, and friends. The corn roasts and fish fries would give way to card games. But he was the happiest helping family, friends, and customers with wise counsel, whether about business, finance, family or just the time to listen. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church, Lorain County Insurance Agents, Elyria Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Elyria Post 12, the VFW, and the Elyria Elks. Al’s legacy of love and advice will be greatly missed by the multiple generations that he has touched over the years. He was able to remain at home through the loving help and comfort that was provided by his family and Hospice of the Western Reserve. The family would like to extend their deep gratitude and thanks to all who helped. Private family services will be held in the care of Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Elyria. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where Elyria Amvets Post 32 Honor Guard will present military honors. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in his memory to: Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44110 (HospiceWR.org).
