Alice Bailey, 101 of Avon Lake, Ohio passed away Dec. 26, 2011. Alice was born June 22, 1910 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and grew up in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. She was trained as a music teacher, majoring in Voice at Mansfield University. She received her MA degree at Columbia University in NYC where she was soloist at Riverside Church, gave a concert at Carnegie Hall and also had a weekly radio program.She moved to Vermont to teach at Johnson State Teachers College. After leaving there, she continued to give voice lessons and directed various choruses, as well as serving as choir director for 25 years at the Congregational Church in Waterbury, Vermont.In 1980 Alice and her husband moved to Rotonda West, Florida where they enjoyed playing golf. In November 2005 Alice moved to Independence Village of Avon Lake to be near her daughter.Mrs. Bailey is survived by daughters Sandy Dibbell (David) of Avon Lake and Connie Garcia of The Villages, Florida and brother Col. Arden D. Smith of Sarasota, Florida. Other survivors include grandchildren Tracy Dibbell, Gayle Zawisa, Kristin Nock, Sean, Kevin, and Kathryn Garcia and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Max Bailey in 1986, parents Owen S. Smith and Kathryn McInroy Smith, brothers Raymond and Willard Smith and son-in-law, Mariano Garcia.A gathering to celebrate Alices life will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 in the chapel at Independence Village of Avon Lake, 345 Lear Rd., Avon Lake, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Waterbury Congregational Church Music Fund, 8 North Main St., Waterbury, Vermont 05676.
