Andrew "AJ" Obituary
Andrew J. Smith, “AJ”, 28, of Elyria, died December 2, 2020 in a hunting accident. AJ was born October 19, 1992 in Elyria and played baseball for Elyria Little League East. He was a 2011 graduate of Elyria High School where he was a member of the varsity baseball and varsity golf teams. AJ attended Lincoln College in Illinois, playing baseball for the Lynx and graduating in 2014. He lived in Lincoln for several years, working for the college and joining the Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District as a volunteer fire fighter. He lived in Arizona for two years before returning to Ohio to attend the State of Ohio Fire Academy in Reynoldsburg, graduating in 2018. He worked for the Oberlin Fire Department in 2018 and 2019. AJ moved to Columbus in 2019 and worked as an independent contractor until his death. Surviving family includes his parents, Bradley D. and Kathy Allan Smith of Elyria; sister Bailey K. (Steve) Meluch of North Ridgeville; uncle Andrew Allan of Vermilion, uncle Jon W. (Kim N.) Allan of East Lansing, MI, uncle Jeff (Chris) Smith of Delaware, Ohio; cousins Lukas V. Smith of Chicago, IL and Katie Rose Allan of Norwich, VT; and beloved niece and nephew Madison Lynn and Jacob Andrew Gerber. AJ was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Andrew and Phyllis W. Allan and paternal grandparents Richard D. and Carol E. Smith. Friends will be received Saturday, December 12, 2020 from 11:00 am until the time of a 2:00 pm service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. Reverend Patrick Nicolino, Pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ will officiate. COVID-19 precautions will be observed and masks are required. Maintain social distancing while offering condolences to the family and keep your visit brief.
