Chester R. Chet Hogan, 91, of Elyria, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, September 4, 2011 surrounded by his family at West Bay Care & Rehabilitation Center in Westlake.He was born August 26, 1920 in Elyria, where he was a lifelong resident and 1939 graduate of Elyria high School. He served our country in WWII, with the U.S. Army 36th Infantry Division, 143rd Regiment, Company H, was captured in the 1943 invasion of Salerna, Italy and spent 22 months as a P.O.W. at Stalag IIB Camp in Hammerstein, Germany. Chet was employed for 44 years as a machinist at General Industries in Elyria, retiring in 1984. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, usher, session member and youth leader with his wife Emily. For many years he coached baseball at Little League West, umpired baseball and softball for 29 years and refereed basketball. He was a member of the Barbed Wire Buckeyes Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoner of War and also Elyria American Legion Post 12. He enjoyed walking his granddogs in Cascade Park, spending time with family, attending and watching sporting events and was an enthusiastic supporter of Elyria High School sports; his favorite cheer was Go Elyria, Beat Lorain!Chet is survived by daughters Marty (Jon) Lauber and Carol (John) DeMarino and a son Richard (Judy) Hogan, all of Elyria; grandson Matt (Molly) Hogan of Sullivan, OH; great grandson Jacob; sister Dorothy Bohnert of Stuart, FL and a brother Roger Hogan of Westerville, OH.He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Emily Lou in 1994; parents John & Hettie Hogan; sisters Edtha Schaeffer and Grace King and brothers John, Dale and Wayne Hogan.Friends will be received Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. A funeral service will be Thursday 10:30 a.m. at First United Presbyterian Church, 200 East Ave., Elyria, OH 44035. Reverend Rick Stein, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria with Elyria V.F.W. Post 1079 conducting military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Presbyterian Church.
