Cleta Faye Shippy, 78, of Elyria, passed away peacefully with family at her side May 2, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio following a short illness. Cleta was born March 21, 1938 in London, Kentucky, the daughter of Maymie Cecil (Parker) and Elmer Chester Gibbs. She married her husband of 60 years, Lonny Gene Shippy, March 17, 1956 and has been a resident of Elyria since 1975. Cleta had a strong belief in God and delighted in caring for her family. She loved to feed all who entered her home with her creative cooking. She was a gifted artist, working with any medium. She enjoyed spending time with friends, playing cards, auto trips, bicycling, family genealogy, reading and movies. She loved birds and gardening and was a cheerful conversationalist who could talk to anyone. Her smile and resilient optimism brought friends and strangers a ray of sunshine. Cleta especially enjoyed sharing stories about rural life in Kentucky, and was proud of her early career, working with computers in the late 1950s. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Steven (Kathy) Shippy of Friendswood, Texas; Edward Shippy of Conroe, Texas; daughters Linda Brown of Elyria, Ohio; Julie (Trevor) McGill of Powell, Ohio; and Amy (Michael) Lewis of Lewis Center, Ohio; granddaughters Tamara Zalud, Jennifer Young, Cassidy Brown, Victoria Martin, Calida Brown, Ava McGill, and Abigail Lewis; grandsons Tyler Garrison, Ian McGill, Jack Lewis; great grandchildren Trystn Moyer, Isaac Moyer and Addison Churchwell; and numerous nieces and nephews, all dear to her heart.She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Frankie Merlene (Gibbs) Flanery.Friends will be received Friday, May 6, 2016 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria where a service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Pastor Cal Searles, pastor of Abbe Rd. Baptist Church, Elyria will officiate. Burial will follow on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. The family extends their appreciation to the staff of University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and the Neurological Intensive Care Unit of The Cleveland Clinic for the excellent care given to Cleta.
