Donald R. Don Handyside, 87, lifelong resident of Elyria, died peacefully May 14, 2016 at Life Care Center of Elyria.He was born August 17, 1928 in Elyria and attended Elyria High School.Don had a knack for fixing almost anything, and began working as an auto mechanic for J.R. Dall Ford before he drove truck for over 30 years as a car hauler, driving for E.& L. Transport in Lorain. Don was a member of Abbe Road Baptist Church in Elyria and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, woodworking, restoring cars, building furniture and spending time at his cabin in Clearfield County, PA. Don is survived by wife of 46 years, E. Darlene (nee Willoughby) Handyside; daughters, Pamela Short and Georgia Snyder; sons Jerry Snyder, Jr., Ron (Esther) Snyder and John (Renee) Handyside, all of Elyria. Also surviving is a son, Gary Handyside of West Palm Beach, FL; and daughters, Bonna (Don) Kuhn and Gail (Mark) Firment, both of Elyria and Jennie Cambarare of Royal Palm Beach, FL; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents John & Nita (nee Thomas) Handyside and a brother, Harlan Handyside.Friends will be received Wednesday, May 18, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. Friends will also be received Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 10 a.m. until the time of an 11:00 a.m. service in the funeral home. Reverend Cal Searles will officiate and. burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial contributions may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 8001 Sweet Valley Dr. Valley View, OH 44125.
