Donald H. McGaughey, 89, of Grafton, died Monday, August 22, 2011 at EMH Healthcare.He was born May 9, 1922 in Canton, OH and graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1940. He received a B.S. degree in Education in 1950 and his Masters degree in school administration in 1955, both from Kent State University. He moved to Elyria in 1951 and taught in the Elyria City Schools for 34 years, retiring in 1984. For the last 27 years of his career, he was principal at Cascade Elementary School. After retiring, he and his wife were tutors for the Ohio Reads Program.He was a member of LaPorte United Methodist Church and had previously sung in the choir. He was a member and former vice president of the Lorain County Community Choral and also Catch The Spirit Choral, with whom he traveled to Europe. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and had written poems and composed 187 instrumental and vocal pieces, one of which was for his daughter, a French horn player in Europe. He was also a member of Lorain County Retired Teachers Association. Don is survived by his wife of 59 years D. Arlene McGaughey; son Craig McGaughey and his partner Tom Schaefer of South Euclid; daughter Marcie McGaughey-Behler of Duisburg, Germany; sisters Betty Hahn of East Canton, OH and Marilyn OMalley of New York City.He was preceded in death by a brother Richard McGaughey and a sister Arlene McGaughey.A memorial service will be Wednesday 5:00 p.m. at LaPorte United Methodist Church, 2071 Grafton Rd., Elyria. Music will begin at 4:45 p.m. Reverend Loren Gesselbeck and Rev. Jonathan McCleery will officiate.
