Douglas M. NicholsDouglas M. Nichols, 97, of LaGrange Township, died November 24, 2017, at Life Care Center of Elyria. He was born on Dec. 9, 1919 in Elyria.Doug was a B-24 pilot in WWII & served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 – 1946. After the war he enjoyed flying with the Stick & Rudder Club & eventually built his own grass strip airport on Rt 301 south of LaGrange. His daughter remembers going with him to serve a shift at one of the Sky Watch Towers in the ‘50s. He had a life-long passion for aircraft & small privately owned airports. Doug often reminisced about serving on the Site Selection Committee for the Lorain County Regional Airport. When his feet were on the ground, Doug worked as a designer for Lear Romec, Bendix & other local firms.Doug’s best selection was marrying Rose Mary Barlow on April 17, 1943. Rose Mary died on April 16, 2013, one day before their 70th Wedding Anniversary. He met Rose Mary when he went into a store to buy “streamers”, also known as pink toilet paper, to throw out of an open cockpit airplane over a friend’s wedding reception.Douglas is survived by his daughter & son-in law Diane & Jim Fields of Export, PA; grandchildren, Paul (Shaune) Fields of Medina, Jill Fields of St. Petersburg, FL and Douglas (Andrea) Fields of Pittsburgh, PA; great grandchildren, Eliza Fields, Samantha Fields & Ethan Fields; extended family & beloved neighbors.Douglas was also preceded in death by his son, David; parents, Sam & Ruth Nichols; sisters Doris Baker & Beth Ehlke.The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Preferred Care of Lorain County & especially to his main caregiver, Kinga Majoros, for their loving care since 2013.Friends will be received Monday, November 27, 2017, from 1:00pm until the time of a 3:00pm memorial service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria.
