Durward “D.A.” Knepper, Jr.Durward “D.A.” Knepper, Jr., 85, of Elyria, died December 23, 2016 at his home in the care of family and friends. He was born July 3, 1931 in Elyria and attended Elyria High School. D.A. was proud of his military service to his country. From 1949 to 1952, he was a corporal in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Korea, where he was a P.O.W. and received the Purple Heart.For 37 years, he and his wife were owner/operators of the Greyhound Bus stations in Lorain and Elyria, retiring in 1999. He attended Washington Avenue Christian Church, collected Greyhound memorabilia and read the works of American novelist Louis L’Amour. He was active with the Silver Sneakers and enjoyed participating in his Army unit reunions in Alabama and Florida, Greyhound retiree breakfasts, and the activities of his wife’s EHS graduating class of 1952. He was also a fan of the Cleveland Browns and Indians. D.A. is survived by his wife of 64 years, Arlene E. (nee Wallhead); daughters Sheila M. Smith of Elyria and Dawna L. White of Plantation, FL; grandchildren, Lisa M. (Jason) Ward and Jeremy A. (Heidi) Smith; great grandchildren, Marisa and Lydia Ward and Theresa Smith; sister Patricia Schwarz of Elyria and a brother Giles “Bing” Knepper of Lorain. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gayle Knepper, cherished grandson Darrell Harris, parents Durward and Marjorie Knepper, twin brother Dwight Knepper, brother, Donald Gorr, sister, Helen Post and son-in-law, Clifford “Smitty” Smith. A committal service will be Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. Reverend Dr. Janet A. Long will officiate and Elyria V.F.W. #1079 will present military honors.A memorial gathering will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Washington Avenue Christian Church, 301 Washington Ave., Elyria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or a charity of donor’s choice.
