Edwin G. Haywood, City Auditor, Finance Director, School Treasurer Edwin G. Haywood, 92, a life long Elyria resident, passed away April 28, 2022 at Wesleyan Village, Elyria after a brief illness. Born December 22, 1929 in Elyria, he was a 1947 graduate of Elyria High School where he was a member of the A cappella choir and tennis team. After attending Baldwin-Wallace University nights for 17 years, he graduated in 1971 with a BA degree in Business Management and Economics. From September 1950 to November 1953, Ed served in the US Air Force as a Senior Statistical Specialist. During that time, he spent over two years in France where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his military service he was employed at Thew Shovel Co. in Lorain for nine years, leaving in 1963 when he was elected Elyria City Auditor. During his term in office he was founder and President of the North Central Ohio Municipal Finance Officers and was also active in state and national organizations. Ed resigned as Auditor in September 1969 to become Administrator of Center Ridge Medical Clinic. There he was active in the Medical Group Management Association. He returned to public employment in 1972 to become Treasurer of Midview Local Schools, where he remained until July 1976, when he accepted the same position for Elyria City Schools, retiring in July 1990. In his retirement he served both Lorain City Schools and Midview Local Schools as an interim treasurer. During the more than 18 years Ed was with the schools, he was a member of the Association of School Business Officials of U.S. and Canada and was active in the Ohio Association of School Business Officials. He was a past president of Northeast Ohio Chapter of O.A.S.B.O. and Lake Erie Treasurer’s Association. He was awarded a Registered School Business Official (RSBO) in 1975. Ed also served a part-time position as Finance Director of Elyria and as a financial consultant for North Ridgeville. Ed’s community service activities included panel chairman of the Central Allocations Committee and supervisor of the audit committee for United Fund. He was a member of Elyria Toastmasters, treasurer of Spring Valley PTA and active in Elyria Junior Achievement, where he was an advisor and board member. He served as treasurer of the 2003/04 Elyria Public Library levy committee. Ed was a 27-year member and past president of East Elyria Kiwanis where he served on the board and chaired several committees, including the HOBY leadership program for high school sophomores. As a member of the Elyria Schools & Friends Alumni Association, he was in charge of Ways and Means. He was also a member of Elyria Moose Lodge #778, American Legion Post #12, Senior Mens’ Fellowship where he served multiple terms as treasurer, and was a member and past president of the United British Society of Lorain County. He was an active 65-year member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elyria and had served as a member of the Board of Trustees, the Diaconate and as Treasurer for the Board of Christian Outreach. Mr. Haywood was inducted into the Elyria Schools Alumni Hall of Fame class of 2006 as a distinguished alumni, staff member and community volunteer. Ed was a cancer survivor, having had his bladder removed in 1976. Shortly after he joined the Lorain County Ostomy Association and served as their treasurer for most of the years since. Ed has been an inspiration for his determination to stay active despite major health issues. He will be greatly missed for his many fine qualities, including love of family, kindness and sense of humor. He enjoyed golf, photography and traveling with his wife. Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol J.; daughters, Janet H. Milkie (Gregg), Lynda L. Williams (Jim); son, William E. “Rick” Haywood (Dawn Galang); grandchildren, Jeff Milkie (Angela), Eric Milkie (Ariel), Matthew Williams (Kelsey), David Williams (Racheal Kimeu), Lindsay Haywood, and Braeden Haywood and a great-granddaughter, Vivian L. Milkie. He was preceded in death by his parents Olga B. and Edwin H. Haywood and his brother Thomas P. Haywood. Friends will be received Saturday, June 25, 2022 from 1:00 pm until the time of a 2:00 pm memorial service at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 Second Street, Elyria. Long time family friend, Reverend David Kimberly and Reverend Patrick Nicolino will officiate. Following the service, friends will also be received in the Great Hall of the Church. Private burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Haywood Family Fund in care of Community Foundation of Lorain County, 9080 Leavitt Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035 or First Congregational UCC, Attention: Food Pantry.
