Eleanor Holliday Whitehead, 98, of Elyria, died October 29, 2016 at Kendal at Oberlin.She was born September 18, 1918 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She received her B.A. from Kent State University; her M.A. from Western Reserve University and her degree as an Educational Specialist from Kent State University. She was employed in the Elyria City Schools as a teacher and then as principal at Prospect Elementary and Erie Elementary Schools, retiring in 1982. Eleanor was a member and served on numerous Boards in Elyria including: Lorain County Historical Society, Center for Lifelong Learning of Lorain County Community College, Samaritan Center, Quota Club of Elyria, Friends of the Elyria Public Library, St. Andrews Episcopal Church Vestry and Altar Guild, Lorain County Retired Teachers Association and the Elyria Y.W.C.A.Honors included being nominated for the Hall of Fame Award of the Elyria Schools and Friends Alumni Association and the Elyria Y.W.C.A. Women of Achievement Award. In her retirement years, she enjoyed extensive worldwide traveling.Eleanor is survived by a son, James M. Whitehead (wife Sheila Cleary) of Woodstock, VA and a daughter, Catherine Hammond (husband Troy Morrow) of Sun Lakes, AZ; grandchildren Laurel Hubble and Russell Zinck; sister, Roberta Holliday of Elyria and nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Gardiner H. Whitehead in 1982, parents Fletcher and Nell Holliday and sisters, Dorothy Fox, Phyllis Welsh and Lucille Cornelius and brothers, Richard Holliday and Clifford Cathey.Friends will be received Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A funeral service will be Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 300 Third St. Elyria. Reverend June Hardy Dorsey, Rector will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
