Elizabeth (Betty) James died Friday afternoon, February 17, 2017 in Oberlin. Mrs. James was born January 21, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Edith Morrow and Ira Ward Schmidt. They moved to LaGrange, IL and Betty graduated from Lyons Township High School and Iowa State University at Ames, IA. Upon graduating, with a degree in foods and nutrition, she wrote food publicity for the American Meat Institute in Chicago. At the conclusion of WWII, Betty married William G. James and while he earned his degree at the University of Illinois she served as an assistant in the Home Economics Department. They lived in Cleveland Heights, OH most of their married life before moving to Kendal at Oberlin.Mrs. James had been active in PTA and president at the elementary school her children attended and served on the Cleveland Heights-University Heights PTA Council, was a member of the Council on Aging in Cleveland Heights, a volunteer with the Northern Ohio Hemophilia Foundation and held various offices in her P.E.O. Chapter. She was an active member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church serving on Session, various ad hoc committees, and as a church school teacher. For nine years she worked as assistant in Christian Education at the church. She sewed for her whole family, loved classical music, and enjoyed playing bridge.She is survived by: her sister Ruth Miller (Bill), her daughters Kathy James-Webb (Charles), Barbara Vissers (William), daughter-in-law Gloria Pfeif, grandchild Sarah McVay (Stuart) and great-grandsons William and Winston; grandchild Michael Vissers (Jennifer) and great-granddaughters Alexa, Stella and Norah; step-grandchild Maria Stout (Ken) and step great-grandchildren Peter and Lily; and step-grandchild Paul Webb (Carrie) and step great-grandchildren Dashiell and Dorothy. She was preceded in death by her husband William and their son Richard. An inurnment service at the Columbarium at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Heights, OH was held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Kendal at Oberlin, Oberlin, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Harvest, 5510 Baumhart Rd, Lorain, OH 44053 or a charity of your choosing. Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria is handling arrangements.
