Grove Rorick Speedy Amos, 89 of Elyria, died March 20, 2015 at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center.He was born November 7, 1925 in Wheeling, WV and graduated from St. Clairsville, High School in 1943. He was a 1949 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. During WWII, from 1944 to 1946, Rorick served with the United States Marine Corps 1st Marine Division in Okinawa, where he was wounded and received The Purple Heart. When the Korean War broke out, Rorick was recalled and in June of 1950, rejoined the 1st Marine Division in North Korea. He participated in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, and although outnumbered by Chinese troops, they were able to break out of the encirclement and fight their way back to safety in South Korea. In 1952, Rorick was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was a member of Elyria V.F.W. #1079, a lifetime member of The Marine Corps League and the Chosin Reservoir Veteran Fraternity.He was an insurance agent for 42 years, and vice president of Harold Rorick Insurance Company, Elyria. He had been an active member and former Sunday school teacher at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elyria. He was a member of Elyria Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and a volunteer for Laubach Literary Program and Ohio Read. Speedy was a member of the Advisory Board of the Elyria Salvation Army, a member of the former Elyria Memorial Hospital Company, and for over twenty years delivered Meals on Wheels.Rorick is survived by his wife Helen Lou (nee Henderson) whom he married April 23, 1955; Daughters Beth Amos of Elyria, and Susan Mollineaux of Cincinnati; grandchildren Mark Grover Mollineaux and Emily Beth Mollineaux and a brother J. Wendell (June) Amos.He was preceded in death by his parents J. Grove and Ruth Amos.Rorick was known and loved by all for his warm, outgoing personality, and sense of humor. A memorial service will be Saturday, March 28th, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at First Congregational United Church of Church, 330 2nd Street, Elyria with Reverend Patrick Nicolino and Reverend Kathryn Ketchum officiating. Elyria V.F.W. #1079 will present military honors. Burial will be at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Elyria Rotary Endowment Fund, C/O Gregory Kruszka, 3635 Lexington Court, Westlake, OH 44145.
