Helen M. Gehrke (nee: Ahlgrim) 96, of Elyria Township died August 9, 2014 at her home. She was born March 1, 1918 in Amherst and has been a resident of Elyria most of her life. Helen was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Elyria and had a strong love of animals. She enjoyed gardening and had a green thumb with house plants. For many years she bowled in several area leagues and made chocolates for the holidays.Helen is survived by her daughter, Carol Halcomb of South Amherst; two grandsons and four great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband of seventy years, William C. Gehrke in 2007 and a brother Howard Ahlgrim.Friends will be received Tuesday August 12, 2014 from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A service will be Wednesday August 13, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Brownhelm Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Erie Shores Humane Society P.O. Box 1041 Elyria, OH 44036-1041.
