Henry L. Hank Gasbare, 93, of Elyria died Friday, December 14, 2012 at Wesleyan Village.He was born October 19, 1919 in Canton, Ohio and was a 1937 graduate of Canton McKinley High School. He attended Ohio State University and graduated in 1941 from Tri-State University, Angola, Indiana with a degree in mechanical engineering.After graduation, he was employed as an engineer at Mack Truck in Plainfield, New Jersey.Hank was a talented baseball player, was invited to tryouts with several Major League baseball teams and was a pitcher on a New York Yankees farm team.Upon moving to Elyria, he was employed for 38 years as an experimental test engineer at Bendix Corporation, retiring in 1991. He continued to be active in sports, including playing softball, bowling and had recently been golfing at the age of 91. He also enjoyed being a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.Henry is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary Jeane Bever Gasbare; daughters Susan (Rory) Nelson-Fjeldstad of Twinsburg, OH, Linda Halley of Delaware, OH and Debra Paxton of Paducah, KY; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; stepson Thomas Bever of Naples, FL; stepdaughters Janet (Jack) Smylie of Farmington Hills, MI and Susan See of Acton, Massachusetts; step son-in-law R. Joseph See of Berea, OH; three step grandchildren; sisters Alma Gillogly and Lil Boron, both of Canton, OH.He was preceded in death by his first wife Marjorie R. in 1977; sister Reta Lutz and a step grandson, Ryan See.Friends will be received Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of an 11:30 a.m. service at First United Methodist Church, 312 Third St., Elyria with Reverend Dalton D. Love officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria.
