James “Jim” Albert King, Sr., 95, of Elyria, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home Sunday, October 3, 2021. He was born November 6, 1925 in Elyria, Ohio and was a 1943 graduate of Elyria High School. Jim enlisted at age 18 in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and served as an aircraft maintainer. He was recalled from the reserves for the Korean Conflict during which he served in the US Air Force as the crew chief on a C-119 aircraft. He graduated from the Northrop Institute of Technology in Inglewood, CA and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Miami Beach, FL. Jim was an avid storyteller and enjoyed recalling his experiences with teenage friends in Elyria and Put-In-Bay as well as many colorful tales from his military service. In 1988, he retired from NASA in Cleveland with twenty-eight years of service during which he built and operated the cyclotron which was eventually used by the Cleveland Clinic to treat cancer patients. He retired in a supervisory capacity. He enjoyed his many years of membership in Elyria Masonic Lodge #787, the Black River Stamp Club, the Olin Family Society, and the Elyria Elks #465. He was most proud of his stamp collection which he began at age 7. Avid travelers, he and Peggy wore out 4 motorhomes traveling throughout the country. They also enjoyed taking several ocean cruises. For the past 7 years, he helped his daughter Janice at Z-Graphics by Jan, daily driving himself to and from work and running errands. Jim is survived by children Linda (Kenneth) Morris, Durham, NC, Kathryn, Atlanta, GA, Janice (James) Susak, Carlisle Township, OH, and James Jr., (Mary), Wallingford, PA; 11 grandchildren and 18.5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of seventy years Peggy (nee Hendrix); parents Albert and Winifred King and a sister Anna Harris. Friends will be received, Wednesday, October 6, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 10:00 am until the time of an 11:00 am service at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. Reverend W. Kent Joy will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
