James L. Dall> James L. Dall, 95, of Elyria, died peacefully at the home of his daughter in Sonora, California, December 31, 2017.> James was born November 16, 1922, in Norwalk, Ohio. He graduated from Grossmont High School, Grossmont, California in 1939 and from San Diego State College in 1943. His childhood and early adulthood were shared between Elyria and San Diego. Jim lived in California from 1928 to 1930; in Elyria from 1930 to 1937, and in California from 1937 to 1947, returning to Elyria in 1947. > James joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served at various bases, including Pearl Harbor and Guam. He married Barbara Sutherland on October 23, 1943. He was employed for a year at Security Trust and Savings Bank in San Diego. He and Barbara moved to Elyria in 1947 where Jim joined his father, J.R. Dall in the J.R. Dall Ford Dealership. Following his father’s death, James continued to own and operate the business until his retirement in 1994. James was chairman of the National Ford Dealers’ Council, 1967-1968, and received numerous sales and service awards and recognitions. > James was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, and served as Chairman of the Trustees, as a deacon, and on other church boards and committees. He served for thirty-four years on the Board of Trustees of the Lorain County Bank, AKA Premier Bank and Trust. He served on the Advisory Board of the Elyria Salvation Army and on the Board of Directors of the Elyria YMCA. He was a charter member of the Lorain County Sales and Executives, and a past president of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Elyria Country Club, Elyria Elks Club and Elyria Kiwanis Club. > James loved the out-of-doors, from the spectacle of an Ohio thunderstorm, to canoeing on the Black River, to hiking the Himalayas. He especially loved the mountains and enjoyed various mountain adventure treks in the Himalayas, the Alps, Alaska, Chile, the Rockies, and the Sierra Nevada. He was a lifelong skier and “wretched” golfer and an ardent advocate for the environment. He was devoted to his friends and family and inspired in his children and grandchildren a love for the natural world and the importance of community.> James is survived by his daughters, Carol (Michael) Crich of Sonora, California, Ellen (David) Drell of Willits, California, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty seven years, Barbara, his youngest daughter, Shirley Painter, his parents James R. and Corrine Dall, and his brothers, George Dall (who died in WWII) and John Dall of San Diego.> A memorial service will Saturday, February 10 2018 at 2:30 PM at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 2nd Street, Elyria. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
