James Canan Obituary
James W. Canan, 94, of Elyria, died October 6, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He was born May 27, 1925 in Richmond, IN. During WWII, James served in the United States Army in Northern France, The Rhineland, and Central Europe. On October 29, 1944 he was wounded in France and was awarded the Purple Heart. In 1949, he graduated from Purdue University. He moved to Elyria that same year, and was employed as a chemical engineer with General Motors until retiring in 1984. James was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Elyria Rotary. His hobby was coin collecting. James is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary K. (nee Redelman); daughter, Suzanne Hatvany of Apex, NC; sons, Mark (Barbara) Canan and Eric Canan, both of Elyria; grandchildren, Matthew, Laura, Melissa, Andrew, Nikolaus, and Kathryn; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, John (Imogene) Canan of Winona Lake, IN. Friends will be received Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A funeral service will be Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 11:00 am in Grace Lutheran Church, 9685 East River Street, Elyria with Reverend Robert F. Weldon, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
