Joan Schmittgen Obituary
Joan Lee Schmittgen (nee Betz), of Elyria, passed peacefully October 14, 2021, after an illness of several months. She was born April 20, 1933, in Elyria, where she was a resident most of her life. She was a 1951 graduate of Elyria High School and kept in touch with her childhood friends throughout her lifetime. Joan retired in 1988 from a twenty-four-year career at Harshaw Chemical Company (now BASF), where she was considered a valuable laboratory and administrative employee. She loved her meticulous home, built by her husband and family, and was known as an excellent cook and baker, particularly her pies and potato salad. Joan loved day trips to Amish Country, visits across the US, and to visit their youngest son in Germany when he was in the military. Throughout her life, she was known for her sense of humor, her excellent memory, and for being a loving wife and mother. Joan and her husband, Jack L. Schmittgen, were married June 21, 1958, in Grace Lutheran Church, Elyria, where they have been life-long members. She was a Sunday School teacher for fifteen years, sharing God’s love with young children, including her own. Cherishing her memory are her husband of sixty-three years, Jack L.; sons, Jeffrey L., Jonathan L., and Joel L. (Kristen Jones); daughter-in-law, Barbara Schmittgen; grandchildren, Christine and Daniel Schmittgen, and a niece, Carolyn Young. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Edna (nee Henry) Betz. Friends will be received Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 4 pm, at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A family graveside service will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, with Reverend Robert F. Weldon, Sr. officiating.
