Joseph T. Tom Dunlap, 89, of Elyria, died Monday, February 4, 2013 at The Abbewood in Elyria.He was born October 24, 1923 in Lorain and was a 1941 graduate of Elyria High School. He studied engineering at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and then served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving The Purple Heart and European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 3 bronze stars.Tom was a firefighter with the Elyria Fire Department from 1946 until retiring in 1983 as assistant fire chief. After retirement, he was employed as a crossing guard for the Elyria City Schools. He had formerly attended St Agnes, St. Mary and St. Jude Churches in Elyria.He enjoyed: his family, all sports, was an enthusiastic follower of Elyria High School Pioneer sports, an Ohio State Buckeye fan and a Cleveland Indians fan. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and his pet dogs over the years.Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen L. (nee Miko); daughter Denise Ann (David) Meister of South Haven, MI; son Thomas A. (Susan) Dunlap of Mission Viejo, CA; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a sister Lois Kuhn in 1980.Friends will be received Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of a 12:30 pm. funeral service at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria.Toms son-in-law, Reverend David W. Meister will officiate, assisted by a nephew, Fr. Christopher Kuhn and Reverend Alana Kelley. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria where Elyria V.F.W. # 1079 will conduct military honors.
