Larry W. Phillips, 65, of South Amherst, formerly of Lorain, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland after a sudden illness.He was born February 16, 1947 in Spraggs, PA and was a 1966 graduate of Elyria High School. Larry worked for U.S. Steel at the Lorain Pipe Mill, retiring in February of 2012. He was also a Deputy with the Lorain County Sheriffs Department in 1979, serving 10 years on road patrol. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Philippines during the Vietnam War, member of Elyria Eagles #431 and Lorain AMVETS Post 47. Larry is survived by his sons Todd J.A. Phillips of Tucson, AZ and Tad W. (Shelby) Phillips of Vermilion; grandsons Jonathan, David and Cooper Phillips; granddaughter Laura Vasi; sisters Linda (Max) Jones of LaGrange, Ruth (Larry) Mecera of Carmichaels, PA and Sandra (William) Marshall of Valrico, Fl.He was preceded in death by parents Stanley W. and Verna E. (nee Moore) Phillips Dragan and stepfather, John Dragan in 1999.The family will have a celebration of life gathering in honor of Larry on Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 2 to 4 pm at The Nest Restaurant located at 3701 Liberty Ave. Vermilion, OH 44089. A celebration will also be on Saturday, December 15, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Spraggs United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Spraggs, PA.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Neurology Patient Care, Education and Research Fund, The MetroHealth Foundation Towers 135 A, 2500 MetroHealth Drive, Cleveland, OH 44109.
