Louis W. Bill Smith, 86, of Elyria, died January 3, 2016 at Mercy New Life Hospice, Lorain.Bill was born January 8, 1929 in Bergholz, OH, grew up in Pennsylvania and had served with the Merchant Marines. He and his brother Jim had owned and operated High Street Auto Sales in Elyria. He was then employed for 20 years as a maintenance mechanic at BFI, retiring in 1994. Some of his many interests included classic and antique cars, woodworking, attending flea markets, reading the bible and American and civil war history.Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karen (nee Huber); daughters Julia Smith and Susan (Tim) Wamsley, both of Elyria; sons Louis (Lisa) Smith, Jr. of Elyria, Samuel (Jessica) Smith of Orwell, OH and James (Katherine) Smith of Strongsville; grandchildren Amanda Wamsley and Samuel Smith, Jr.; brothers Elmer (Shirley) Smith of Parker, PA and Frank (Patty) Smith of Hadley, PA.He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and eight sisters.Friends will be received Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. A service will be Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Greg Lockridge officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
