Lucille Hassler Obituary
Lucille L. Hassler, 85, of Elyria, died in her home July 10, 2020. She was born July 22, 1934 in Vanceboro, North Carolina, a child of World War II, having relatives who fought in both the South Pacific, and Europe. Her Uncle Bennett was part of the D-Day Invasion of Europe and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge. She constantly moved and traveled across the USA to different embarkation points but attended public schools mostly in California. She was a graduate nurse and graduated from Duke University School of Anesthesia. She felt privileged to have worked with some of the world’s foremost surgeons of her day. Lucille met her husband, Dr. William L. Hassler in the medical library at Duke University where he was a medical student. Before moving to Elyria in 1961 with her husband, she worked in the Anesthesia Department at University Hospitals, Cleveland. Lucille enjoyed traveling the world which made her realize the importance of American leadership in a world, frequently in crisis. Her interests were studying American and World History which she felt was important to know so that mistakes of the past be understood and not repeated. Lucille also enjoyed painting, designing her home, gardening, music and writing. She lost her husband Dr. William L. Hassler to pancreatic cancer in 2004. It was Lucille’s idea along with assistance of past President of EMH Kevin Martin to create The Legacy Gallery in the hallway of which is now University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Lucille is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Dr. Darryl) Hodgkinson of Sydney, Australia and their children, James and Victoria Hodgkinson; son, William (Karen) Hassler Jr. of Kalamazoo, Michigan and their children, Michelle Baily and Justin Hassler; son, Thomas (Michelle) Hassler of Williamsburg, Virginia and their children Joe and Jane Hassler; and brother Raymond (Josephine) Morris of Jacksonville, Florida. A family celebration of life was held at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Elyria.
