Marian Valkenburg Obituary
Marian R. Van Valkenburg (nee Paterson), 101, of Elyria, died May 10, 2022 at Wesleyan Village, Elyria. She was born January 5, 1921 in Elyria and was a graduate of Lorain High School. Marian was a 95 year resident of Elyria and since 2005 has resided at Wesleyan Village. She was employed by the Elyria Public School System for 26 years, retiring as assistant to the Food Service Director. Marian was a member and had been a volunteer at First United Methodist Church, Elyria, a member of Air Force Mothers, a RSVP volunteer, secretary to friends of the library and a former Girl Scout leader. Some of her other interests included all forms of painting and crafts, playing Bridge at numerous locations around Elyria, travel, and she was also a prolific reader of non-fiction. Marian is survived by her children, Marilyn Briggs, Robert (Jan) Van Valkenburg, Alan (Janet) Van Valkenburg, Jane Cornwell and Frederick (Tomoko) Van Valkenburg; grandchildren, Jeff, Becky, Heather, Karen, Kevin, Brian, Laura, Paul, Brett, Derek and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren, Baylee, Taylor, Trevor, Sam, Vivian, Gloria, Lauren, Claire, Harry, Marin and Evan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Harold in 1989; parents, Alexander and Margaret (nee Amidon) Paterson; and a sister, Hazel Paterson. Friends will be received Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A memorial service will be Monday, May 16, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Wesleyan Village, 807 West Avenue, Elyria with Reverend Kurt D. Walker, Chaplain officiating. Private burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 312 Third Street, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
