Mary Louise VanDyke's Obituary
Mary VanDyke Obituary
Mary Louise VanDyke, 94, of Oberlin, died December 12, 2021, at Lorain Mercy Health. She was born February 28, 1927, in Rochester, PA and was an accomplished musician, educator, master weaver and director of children’s choirs. Her volunteer work was extensive including Friends of Oberlin Artists Series; Hymn Society; Coordinator of the Dictionary of American Hymnology at the Oberlin College Library; Allen Art Museum; and various jobs for the Oberlin Alumni Association. Mary Louise was a Founder and longtime resident at Kendal at Oberlin having moved in at opening in 1993. She delighted residents and friends with her creative cards and notes honoring their special occasions. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don VanDyke in June 2021. The VanDyke’s had countless family members across the world from their lifelong relationships built from their missionary work, avid support of international students (American Field Service) and “adoption” of much-loved Oberlin College students. They gave special attention to the women’s field hockey teams, attending games and inviting the teams for brunch in their home. The absence of the VanDyke’s in Oberlin (and beyond) will be felt in countless ways having been supporters of the Oberlin Community and nonprofit organizations for more than 50 years. A private burial will take place in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin.
