Matthew J. DeMartinis, 78, a longtime resident of Sheffield Lake, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a three year illness.He was born October 1, 1934 in Farrell, PA, was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School and attended University of Dayton. He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War and later with the Army Reserves. Matthew was employed for 30 years with The Plain Dealer and Cleveland Press, retiring in 1997 as district manager after 30 years. He also worked as an usher with The Cleveland Indians and had been a volunteer firefighter with Sheffield Lake Fire Department. He coached Little League Baseball and Jr. Football with Sheffield Lake City Leagues and enjoyed traveling to casinos, sports and visiting his children and grandchildren.Matthew is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sharon M. (nee Neiding); sons Matthew DeMartinis and Jeff DeMartinis, both of Sheffield Lake; daughters Laura (Steve) Furderer of Cape Coral, FL, Jane (David) Mickol Frost of N. Olmsted, OH, Tricia (Tim) Fenton of Vermilion, Stephanie (Sean) Souders of Kearney, MO and Nicole (Kyle) Schwochow of Elyria; 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.He was preceded in death by his parents Matthew and Agnes (nee Polson) DeMartinis; brother Tom DeMartinis and sister Rosemary Marrotta.Friends will be received Monday, August 26, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria.
